The New York State Telescope Project
The New York Astronomical Corporation (NYAC) was chartered in 1968 with the goal of providing access to a  telescope to the astronomical community of New York. At the October 2008 business meeting, the NYAC board reaffirmed their desire to pursue a world-class telescope project. The telescope will provide access to the entire NY astronomical community, enable front-line research, excite and train the next generation of students in the STEM disciplines, and stimulate public interest in science.
Progress Updates
At the April 2009 ASNY meeting, a special session was held to solicit community input,  to  discuss the desired criteria for a telescope, and to start the planning process. Oversight for the process is provided by the NYAC board. A small committee (roughly 3 people) will write a call for white papers which will propose a telescope design and will address such issues as science drivers, technology, and funding model. A larger review panel will be created to review the white papers and make a recommendation to the board. Once a telescope design is selected a working group will be formed to craft a proposal which can be presented to state and private funders.
