  Inertia Wands
Description:

Two plastic 'wands' that have internal weights with different distributions; the blue wand has the weights near the ends, the red wand has the weights near the central hand grip. Students hold the wand at the central hand grip, and gently twirl each back and forth. Demonstrates that the rod is more difficult to rotate when the moment of inertia is greater.

Notes: Note that it's best for students to use one wand at a time in the same hand for maximum effect. Students can also try balancing each rod vertically by its end, but the effect isn't as noticeable as using the Balance Rod with Mass at End. These wands are used in the Phys103 Torque experiment.
