• Check for conservation of momentum during elastic and inelastic collisions. Note: This experiment is set up in the 151 lab (Bewkes 204)!

Computers Needed?

• Yes. Speakers are needed as well (Jeff has them!)

• Lab Setup (Bewkes 231; it's a lot easier to move students than air tracks! Check this Phys 151 page for photo details):

  

• An electronic balance is needed for this experiment. Jeff will place it in the lab before each section.
• Set photogates to gate, 1 ms, and memory On (the red light is on).
• Adjust photogates so they are tripped by flag.
• The computers need speakers attached to them so that there is an audible signal as to when the "Calculate" button is pressed in the spreadsheet. Jeff has them, and will connect them before lab.
• Be sure the air tracks are as clean as possible - use acetone if necessary. Also, check the under surface of the air carts for dents and scratchs.
• The bubble levels are used to check the level of the track.
• Extra copies of the momentum data sheet should be printed!
