Basic Idea:

• Become familiar with the basic operation of an oscilloscope, and use it for voltage measurements.

• Lab setup (photo details):
  • Check the batteries in the amplifier and lapel microphone
    • Use the x100 amplifier. The amplifiers in the larger boxes don't seem to be working even with new batteries (Spring 2025)
  • Connect two BNC to double–banana adapters to each oscilloscope, as shown below:

• The oscilloscope is connected to laptop so that screen image can be printed. Use FreeView for GDS-820c or FreeWave for GDS-1152 scope; both programs work best when logged into an admin account.
  • Configuring FreeWave for GDS-1152 scope:
    • Power up scope, connect USB to computer, wait excruciatingly long time for driver to load.
    • In FreeWave, “Connect” icon (first icon, upper left) should show name of scope. Click Binocular icon to search, if needed.
    • Click “Image” button (second icon, upper left). Use button with left/right arrows to switch between scope screen and interface. Hit Play button to mirror live image. Don't use the Full Screen button to fill screen; if you do, then you can't see the Print button! You can exit full screen using Enter key.

• Speed of Sound oscilloscope settings:
  • Use one wood platform under oscilloscope (to tip front upwards), and two platforms under the laptop
  • CH1 & CH2: 500mV (for GDS-1152); ~100mV (for GDS-820c)
  • Sweep: 10ms (for GDS-1152); 125ms (for GDS-820c)
  • Trigger: CH1
  • Allow the scope to trigger automatically:
    • GDS-1152: Mode: Normal (in Trigger menu)
    • GDS-820c: Edge: Single
  • With these trigger settings, the signal from CH1 may start in the middle of the screen, so the CH2 signal will be off screen. If so, move the signals horizontally until CH1 starts around the second verticle line on the scope screen
