Using Fiber Optics as Position Sensors
Matthew Partlow

Matthew Partlow

Abstract:

Through the use of fiber optics, a distance sensing device can be constructed. This project built such a device that consisted of a fiber reflecting light off of a mirror and another fiber picking up a fraction of that light. This fraction of the intensity can be used as a measure of distance to the mirror (or other reflective surface). The sensor that I built could be used for distances from 800 - 1200 μm with a sensitivity of about 25 μm.
