The Effects of Rayleigh Scattering
Through a Video Recorder
Jason Lewis '03

Abstract:

My experiment was designed to see if detectors other than the eye could measure Rayleigh scattering to the same power of -4. My results are not consistent with theory. According to theory Rayleigh scattering changes the intensity of light proportional to the wavelength by a negative power to the fourth. My results using the video recorder state at 45 degrees from the sun the intestity is changed by a power law of -1.0685. For 90 degrees from the sun the intensity is changed by a power law of 0.2876. For 135 degrees from the sun the intesity is changed by a power law of -0.0861.
