Mathematics Problem Of the Week

Spring 2004

POW 5

A boy and his dog

“You paid more than 20 bucks for that mutt?” Ethel asked incredulously, looking at the scruffy pittbull.

Cuthbert grimaced, “That includes her kennel, too.  If Fifi had cost $5 more, the kennel would have been a third of the total.  If the kennel had been $5 less, then Fifi would have been three quarters of the cost.”

How much did Cuthbert pay for Fifi?

Due Friday, February 27th  at Noon.

Solutions should be submitted to Dr. Maegan Bos' mailbox in the Math office or sent via e-mail to mbos@stlawu.edu.

Presentation counts! The prize-winning entry will be selected from all correct submissions, based on the clarity, creativity and elegance of the solution.
