  • Note: Sparky's rate is set to 15 counts per second. Be sure Sparky is set to standby before turning the power on (the fuse might blow if not in standby mode).

• Surgical tube replacement: The pucks are attached with surgical tubing (¹/₈" ID, ¹/₃₂" wall thickness, 82 cm (32 ¹/₄") long. The tubing needs to be replaced every two years. Replacement tubing is found on the shelf with the air table; more can be ordered online (check places that sell supplies for making your own fishing flies - cool colors available!) 6 feet is sufficient to replace the tubes for both pucks. As of the Fall 2017 semester, we have enough sugical tubing to last another 26 years!

• Replacement Procedure:
  1. Remove the plastic "plug" from the top of the puck. There is a very small ring that is attached to the end of the chain; it must be removed with a pair of needle nose pliers. Don't lose this ring! It makes contact with the screw inside of the puck to complete the circuit! When the ring is removed it will be possible to slide the chain out from within the tubing.
  2. Once the ring has been removed, pull the plastic plug off of the metal ferrule. Cut the tubing on the ferrule, and at the top connection, and gently pull the tubing off.
  3. Connect the vertical support post to the air table; the curved part on top should be angled backwards so that when the black connector holding the chains is connected, the chains will hang over the edge of the lab bench.
  4. Gently slide the tubing up over the chain, shaking and tapping the tubing as you go. The chain should fall through the tubing (har, har). Patience is the key here.
  5. Slide the tubing over the metal ferrule on the top; it's easier if you wet the ferrule first (use a wet Kimwipe; don't use spit!).
  6. Slide the plastic plug over the hose (in the correct orientation), then connect the end of the hose to the metal ferrules; again, they slide on easier when they have been moistened.
  7. Carefully attach the tiny rings to the end of the chain. Insert the plastic plugs into each puck, making sure the metal ring makes contact with the screw inside the shaft of the puck.
