Notes:

• The S.O.L. experiment is set up in the hallway outside Bewkes 212 (between door and stairwell; plug extension cord through door of BH 211 – Check with Mass. Pirbhai first. See the photo details page and Jeff's setup manual for detailed photos).

• The laptop is connected to the oscilloscope, logged in with an admin account (e.g. jahncke_lab). Run FreeView on laptop to mirror and print image to lab printer
• The laser does not have a heat-sink, so you must turn off the laser between groups. Turning off the function generator will turn the laser off
• Configuration notes:
  • Fall 2018: New laser!
  • Remember to turn off the detectors when finished, so as not to drain the battery
  • Place the frame with the Fresnel lens in front of the function generator. Moving it closer to the laser will help focus the image at the location of the second detector
• Laser Connection:
  • Black and red wires connect from laser to power supply: red wire to +5v (2^nd terminal from right), black wire to -5v (3^rd terminal from right)
  • BNC cable connects to TTL/CMOS terminal of function generator
  • Connect black alligator clip from BNC cable to ground on power supply (see photos page)
  • Connect red alligator clip from BNC cable to white wire from laser. Place the connected section in a bag to keep from shorting against the optical bench
• Function generator settings:
  • Square wave
  • 100K button
  • Set display frequency to 20 kHz
• Oscilloscope settings:
  • Turn everything on and align lasers and detectors
  • Turn on detectors
  • Press the blue Auto Set button; this will be a decent first approximation
  • Ch. 1: Reference channel, split off signal in parallel with 10 kΩ resistor; set to 10 mV/div
  • Ch. 2: Signal from corner cube, also in parallel with 10 kΩ resistor; 50 mV/div
  • Time Scale: 250 or 500 ns/div
  • Trigger on Ch. 1, Mode Auto Level
  • Buttons used during experiment: Cursor menu, then F2 to select cursor (cycles between Both, Left, Right, Off). Use Variable knob to change cursor position; Run/Stop button to freeze display
