Notes:

• See the photo details page; experiments need to be spread around the room – but not near the computers – so that the magnetic fields don't interfere with each other
  • Place extra compasses on instructor's table
  • Caution: The horseshoe magnet is very heavy (48 lbs ≈ 22 kg), so exercise caution when lifting. Remember to bend at the knees!
  • Things for Jeff to print:
    • 2 copies of Bar Magnet B Field Template for the bar magnet experiment
    • 6 copies of magnet warning sign (2 for outside door, 1 for board, 3 for the back wall)
  • If compasses get their orientations flipped, put them in the box marked "backwards compasses". Jeff will fix them following the instructions on Re-Aligning a Compass Using a Magnetizer

• Bar Magnet setup (photos):
  • 2 setups
  • Place 40 compasses on the template, face down (makes arrow direction easier to see)
  • Leave bar magnet off template; students will put their own magnet there

• Small Coil rig setup (photos):
  • 1 setup
  • The DPDT switch is used to easily reverse the direction of current through the coil
    • Connect the wires from the power supply to the color-coded terminals on the side of the switch labeled battery
    • Connect the wires from the coil to the color-coded terminals on the Direct side of the switch
  • Place 33 compasses on the coil rig board, face down
    • Note that one compass sits inside the coil
  • Set DC power supply to 3.0 volts

  

   

• Pasco Air Coil Solenoid setup (photos):
  • Use a dual regulated power supply (VDC) to power the solenoid
  • Note that the ammeter needs to be connected to the 20A port (since I > 2A)
  • Two spade lugs should already be attached to the coil, which makes it easier to connect the voltmeter (see photos)
  • Jeff will configure the power supply settings:
    • Set the current to 3.0 amps, which will be at a voltage around 3.0 volts. The current limiter will need to be adjusted to allow this much current
    • Put sticky notes on ammeter and voltmeter

• Square coil setup (photos):
  • Connect wire from positive terminal of power supply to copper wire labeled "UP"
  • A double-tap switch is used to reverse the direction of current through the coil without having to turn the power supply off between groups
    • Connect the wires from the power supply to the color-coded terminals on the tap switch labeled BAT. (Battery)
    • Connect the wires from the coil to the color-coded terminals on the tap switch labeled APP. (I assume this stands for Appliance)
  • Set the range switch to position A (flip the switch up), and set the dial to 5
  • Distribute 34 compasses on foam board platform as shown in setup photos.

• Jumping wire setup (photos):
  • Set range switch to A, set dial to 6
