CLASS CHALLENGE
Tuesday, October 23
Today I have decided to test
your mettle as programmers. As a class,
your task for the next twenty minutes is to
write programs that will answer all of the
following questions. You should
organize yourselves to make sure that there
are plenty of people working on each
question. In other words, each
person will only work on one of the programs,
but as a class you should answer all three
questions.
Feel free to consult with Dr. V
or Spencer as you design your programs.
At the end of the time three representatives
(one for each question) will stand at the
front of the class and explain to everyone how
they designed their program and what answer
they found.
- On August 26, 2012 President Fox made a
welcoming speech to new students and their
families during matriculation. How
many words were there in his speech?
- On August 28, 1963 Martin Luther King,
Jr. delivered his famous "I have a dream"
speech. How many times did he use
the word "the" in this speech?
(Including at the start of a sentence,
hint, hint.) How many times did he
use the word "dream"?
- How many words in the words.txt
file are palindromes having at least five
letters? (A palindrome is a word
such as "radar" that reads the same
forwards and backwards.) Give
examples of several of your favorite
palindromes.
